Screening Notes from the Ridonkulous Taylor Lautner LOLfest Abduction

If you were one of the curious few who caught Twilight star Taylor Lautner’s abysmally-reviewed action star debut, Abduction, then you know how insanely, wonderfully ridiculous it is. Like, Razzie shoo-in, I-can’t-believe-I’m-seeing-this-shit awfulsome good times. It’s a film with dialogue so inane, Lautner actually asks, “Are you my mother??” And he’s serious. I had such a good time “WTF”-ing at Abduction, I compiled all of my screening notes within for your perusal. Needless to say, major spoiler alert! It’s amazing how little reason and logic comes into play in John Singleton’s PG-13 actioner, filmed from a script that Lionsgate paid a reported $1 million to buy. Which is incredible because no other film in recent memory has been this amazingly stupid across the board, from the story to the dialogue to the wooden action. It may not have been the box office triumph the filmmakers boldly believed it to be, but at least Abduction is a cult classic in the making! Beware (and enjoy) major spoilers and the worst lines of the year. It’s a must-see — for all the wrong reasons, but still! You won’t be disappointed. Taylor Lautner is playing Ship’s Mast. He’s SO EDGY! Cringe moment #1: He can’t even yell “Yeaaaah!” convincingly. Uh-oh. Not a good sign. Teen-speak ADR’ed into a high school party scene: “That’s swag!” Kudos John Singleton, with your finger on the pulse of today’s youth. Taylor Lautner is underage drinking! (Would Stephenie Meyer approve?) Taylor Lautner is shirtless! (Stephenie Meyer would definitely approve.) Only five minutes have gone by! Child abuse as parent-child bonding. I dig it. Taylor Lautner is swearing guys! He’s so grown up! “I still have THE DREAMS…” Therapist Sigourney Weaver’s advice? Bury those repressed memories of watching your mom getting murdered. BURY THEM DEEP. Jaw clench #1 Obligatory bicep shot #1, followed by jaw clench #2 Apropo of nothing, from Tay-Tay’s BFF: “So what if I go to the gun range three to four times a week to blow off steam?” SHIRTLESS SCENE #2! (He’s legal, ok?) Yes, let’s randomly assign you to partner with your dream girl on a sociology assignment involving looking up missing children websites. SURE. Wait a second, did second unit just misspell “disappeared” in an online chat close-up?? “Are you my mother??” Seriously: “Come in the back door.” Seriously. Number of bombs in the oven: 1 / Number of helmets worn during high speed motorcycle ride: 0 Taylor’s phone call to 911 is interrupted by The Government. “Wait - how’d you know my name??” Because they’re everywhere, dipshit. Escape via balloons. “Get your shit together!” Sigourney Weaver with the only sane line of the movie. Oh, a floating branch wanders by just as you’re trying to escape via the river? HOW CONVENIENT. On the run, Taylor wakes up from a bad dream with a single tear already trickled down his cheek. Hey, it’s the guy from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo! No, not Daniel Craig. Lily Collins flags down a trucker. “Hey, can you take us to Virginia?” “Get in!” “THIS is an odd address!” Lily to Taylor as they drive to his mother’s address through what is CLEARLY a cemetery. My goodness. Jaw clench #15! HERE COMES THE KISSING! Wha—this is terrible. Horrible, bad kisses. A case for joining Team Edward if there ever was one. I think she just made out with his nose. He says he knows what he’s doing now. I think he means he’s totally DONE IT, you guys. Heavy make-out sesh is getting humpy when Lily Collins, who is clearly loose because she dated a college guy a lifetime ago (yesterday), breaks off the straddle-fest - because she’s hungry. Because of course. Bad guy alert! If you’re trying to abduct a kid for convoluted plot reasons, shouldn’t you maybe, you know, not try to murder him right off the bat? Just sayin’. And Taylor defeats him with… his thighs! CROTCH POWER! Whoa. Dude is D-E-A-D. Fun fact: “Did you know cell phones can be turned into listening devices (which then account for enormous plot holes revealing key information to the main villain)?” Stadium parkour! Are you my… father?? THE END (Wait, there was no abduction???) Until next time, when Abduction 2: Abduct Harder promises even greater comic riches.

Weekend Receipts: Lion King Plays Hardball Against Moneyball

The “Circle of Existence” remains unchecked since the Lion King (in 3d) assigned Moneyball to win the weekend receipt war for just about any second week back to back. Kaira Pitt isn't being embarrassed about, though, because the love project notched the finest opening weekend for nearly any baseball movie ever. Really, a couple of large records were set a couple of days ago. Following a jump, we’ll count lower the finest earners and lament the plight of Rachelle Lefervre. 1. The Lion King (in 3d) Gross: $22,130,000 ($61,676,000) Screens: 2,330 Even though it showed up second on Friday’s tally, The Lion King (in 3d) roared again on Saturday — a bigger movie day for families — and attracted through getting a slim victory. However, might be the Lion King actually the Disney jam you need to see in fulgent 3-D? I’d give everything to see Cruella p Vil’s husky fur coat and jutting clavicle defy a while and space. 2. Moneyball Gross: $20,600,000 (new) Screens: 2,993 Though he lost his legendary hair fight with Robert Redford yesterday, Kaira Pitt could call themselves a victor: Moneyball’s earnings place it before Benchwarmers, The Rookie, and my beloved A League that goes for them’s opening weekends (not counting for inflation). It’s an perfectly-examined movie too, meaning we have to expect it to remain a sizable player inside the days later on. The question for you personally is which kind of Oscar contender it's. 3. Dolphin Tale Gross: $20,260,000 (new) Screens: 3,507 Oh, had you been thinking about counting out Harry Connick Junior. as well as the miracle of whales using this roundup? You fool. Dolphin Tale’s very proud showing makes this the initial September weekend ever to feature three films with $20 million intakes. I'd like a follow-up referred to as Memphis Beluga. Now, towards the sadness. 4. Abduction Gross: $11,200,000 (new) Screens: 3,118 Even though the immortal Sigourney Weaver charmed us in this mixed-up, ultimately silly movie, unhealthy buzz and unconvincing starpower of Rachelle Lefervre set Abduction up for just about any weak turnout. Let’s think about the advantages: Sigourney loves Hitchcock movies which is ready to discuss them thorough. Redemption. 5. Killer Elite Gross: $9,500,000 Screens: 2,986 And also the other factor about bad buzz: Following a first trailer for Killer Elite came out, authors agreed the film will be a nondescript Jason Statham vehicle that happened to costar Clive Owen and Robert P Niro. Following a red-colored-colored band trailer came out, its fate was sealed. A great deal a lot more like Killer Remove. Guh-her. 6. Contagion Gross: $8,565,000 ($57,122,000) Screens: 3,136 I, for starters, miss when Contagion was the big champion. There has been “contagious” mind lines being made, Purell puns being hewn, and Peggy Lee-aided “Fever” montages to edit. Now all I'd like can be a Peggy Lee-aided Lady as well as the Tramp (in 3d)” film experience. Please spew this forth, Disney vault. Weekend Chart [Box Office Mojo]

Castle Season 4: What Continues After "I Like You"?

Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic As the saying goes, you can't unring a bell. So, is it possible to unspeak what "I like you"?Fall Preview: Get scoop inside your favorite returning showsThat's the question pending over Castle, since the Season 4 premiere (Monday, 10/c, ABC) focuses heavily how Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) will react to a profession of love from her mystery-author/partner, Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), in last season's finale. Clearly, Castle's "I like you" didn't visit a candlelight dinner, but a direct consequence of Beckett being gunned lower having a sniper. So, you will discover plenty of easy outs, right?"My goals would recognition precisely what we'd carried out the summer season finale and not sweep anything beneath the carpet," creator and executive producer Andrew W. Marlowe notifies TVGuide.com. "My intent wound up being to confront all the issues that we elevated and deal with them with techniques that ... could be both satisfying to fans additionally to some small bit frustrating for individuals who would like Castle and Beckett to acquire back immediately. We now have taken their relationship to another level of complexity. ... [There's] a lot more meaning inside the Beckett and Castle relationship."Which Castle figures made our report on TV's most sexy crime mma fighters?Provides executive producer Laurie Zaks: "Once the genie is let in the bottle, it can't go in. Even if it is not acknowledged vocally, psychologically there's apt to be an optimistic change.InchIt is within people emotional and mental corners in the story that things obtain a little tricky. For example: Will Castle even be capable of see past their very own complicity in Beckett's shooting - by extension, the sacrificial dying of former Capt. Roy Montgomery (Ruben Santiago-Hudson) - to move forward in the relationship along with her?InchIt have been an very sobering event for Castle. Certainly he's a means of calculating guilt," Fillion states. "This is a guy who's not too keen to build up up soon. But he's really been spear-heading this analysis. He's been kicking this hornet's nest around, believing that fixing it'll get him closer to Beckett. However he's losing pals, literally. It will pressure him to build up up slightly.InchFortress exclusive: Meet Castle and Beckett's new captain! Also standing if this involves Castle and Beckett's possible love connection can be a decrease in face time, since new Victoria "Iron" Gates (Cent Manley Jerald) has assumed command in the twelfth Precinct and rapidly began Castle out."He is not familiar with women being around him that aren't disarmed by him immediately," Fillion states. "Women love him, then when they don't, he takes it tough. ... She'll not supply him with one-half chance. Even when he warrants credit, she'll not make it for him. That really bothers him, and it'll be a ongoing fight."Nevertheless the true obstacle preventing a Castle-Beckett hookup is secrecy, as both Beckett and Castle will need to hide significant information from each other in the start of the summer season.Castle exclusive: Star Trek's Michael Dorn is Beckett's shrink"Everybody's got secrets this year,In . Exactly what the Trailers For 'Straw Dogs' Aren't Suggesting

Audiences arranging in the theater a few days ago for 'Straw Dogs' (a remake from the 1971 Dustin Hoffman film) are most likely within the mood for any fun, edge-of-your-chair thriller. That is what the trailers and advertisements and posters let you know to anticipate: the smoothness of L.A. film writer David Sumner (James Marsden) retreats towards the Deep South together with his beautiful blond wife (Kate Bosworth), simply to be faced by intimidating, corn-given local people. Because they challenge his livelihood and threaten his wife, we'll see David Sumner rise to action and defend his home, utilizing a range of home home appliances as weapons -- until he finally squares off from the leader of individuals corn-given local people, performed through the heartthrob, youthful acting sensation Alexander Skarsgard. For that many female fans from the Swedish-born hunk, this is their first opportunity to see Skarsgard about the giant screen inside a high-profile, large-budget Hollywood movie -- inside a villainous role that enables him to smoulder with sensual charisma. There's only one factor the trailers for 'Straw Dogs' aren't suggesting relating to this movie: Alexander Skarsgard's character is really a violent rapist. First, let us have a look in the trailer. This remake's marketing plays up like a home invasion thriller -- so it is at first glance. But what sets the storyline of 'Straw Dogs' aside from 'Trespass' or 'Lakeview Terrace' or 'The Strangers' is really a cerebral dissection of alpha male aggression along with a human being's innate trigger for violence. Possibly original director Mike Peckinpah was approaching that theme having a Grand Guginol type of prodding, but he didn't have the intention to provide a popcorn thriller that youthful audiences could watch on the Saturday evening for any jolt of adrenaline, after which go back to their lives with no much deeper reflection on which they simply viewed. The choice to range from the crime of rape within the 1971 version has triggered a lengthy argument that continues among experts, students & cinephiles. Roger Ebert opined the "most offensive factor concerning the movie is its hypocrisy it's totally devoted to the pornography of violence, but lays about the moral outrage having a shovel" meanwhile Pauline Kael recognized the film, though observing it was "the very first American film that's a fascist thing of beauty.Inch It's a untidy, ambiguous moment inside a confrontational bit of nihilistic storytelling you are able to debates its merits all that's necessary, but one factor was without a doubt -- the studio did not market Del Henney's rapist character together with his shirt off. The way the new film handles the questionable scene is basically an afterthought for this discussion this is about how Screen Gems offered you into purchasing a ticket. For that record, I am not faulting Alexander Skarsgard or Kate Bosworth or remake director Fishing rod Lurie for his or her decision to find yourself in the development. I am basically confused at what Screen Gems wants this movie to become for audiences. The crime still occur in the brand new movie though with "little such ambiguity this time around around" why is Screen Gems only focusing the loop-filled climax and also the sweat-drenched youthful stars using their unbuttoned t shirts within the southern warmth? The candid truth is that lots of individuals don't know this movie is really a remake, and will not be bothered to analyze a movie that's 40 years old. Going only through the advertisements which were put into their lap, the film seems to become a tense, violent thriller that titillates fans of Bosworth and Skarsgard's visual appearance -- and that is where it finishes. The things they will really receive is really a movie full of sexual aggression and challenging outdated sights on masculine entitlement. Did Screen Gems bare this detail secret with regard to a "shock spoiler"? I really hope not, because which means we now have become to the stage that rape is really a cheap scare. My instincts let me know they downplayed these details since it is harmful to business. If Screen Gems promoted the film honestly and communicated to audiences that 'Straw Dogs' would contain dark, complicated depictions of humanity, a large part of the mainstream public with disposable cash wouldn't appear. This can be a movie for 'True Blood' fans no one should draw attention that Eric Northman holds a lady lower and sexually violates her while he thinks he's titled into it. If you achieve upset and shocked the movie wasn't what had you been expecting -- who cares? They previously got your hard earned money. Did you know of 'Straw Dogs' subject material? Will it affect your need to begin to see the film?

The Lady

'The Lady'A EuropaCorp presentation of a EuropaCorp, Left Bank Pictures, France 2 Cinema co-production, with the participation of Canal Plus, France 2 Cinema, Telecine. (International sales: EuropaCorp, Paris.) Produced by Virginie Besson-Silla, Andy Harries. Directed by Luc Besson. Screenplay, Rebecca Frayn.Aung San Suu Kyi - Michelle Yeoh Michael Aris - David Thewlis Kim - Jonathan Raggett Alex - Jonathan Woodhouse"Democracy takes time," a character observes in "The Lady," though viewers of all political stripes will be checking their watches during Luc Besson's dully conventional tribute to heroic Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi. Dramatizing the long-term personal sacrifices made by Suu Kyi and her family in courageous defiance of Burma's cruel military regime, this handsomely mounted picture is, at nearly 2 1/2 hours, far too long and indigestible for a film whose protagonist spends most of her screen time under house arrest. A marketing campaign emphasizing Michelle Yeoh's performance in the title role will precede muted public reception. A prologue set in 1947 Rangoon depicts the assassination of Suu Kyi's father, Gen. Aung San, a hero to his people for the key role he played in liberating Burma from British rule. Only 3 when her father is killed, Suu Kyi is next seen in 1988, as a beautiful, seemingly carefree woman (now played by Michelle Yeoh) living in British domestic bliss with her husband, Oxford academic Michael Aris (David Thewlis), and their two sons, Kim (Jonathan Raggett) and Alex (Jonathan Woodhouse). But Suu Kyi shows her inner strength when she's called back to Rangoon to care for her ailing mother, and is horrified by fresh eruptions of violence and civil unrest. When the dictatorial Gen. Ne Win (Htun Lin) seems to bow to the revolutionaries' demands, Suu Kyi's friends and colleagues ask her to stay in Rangoon and lead the emergent National League for Democracy, recognizing that the daughter of the late Gen. Aung San would make a powerful figurehead for their cause. "This is the moment you always sensed would come," Michael intones, a line that may confuse the uninformed, given how little of the couple's personal commitment to Burma has made it to the screen. Having appeared to concede, Gen. Ne Win and his ruthless military government plot to limit Suu Kyi's influence without making the mistake of martyring her. To keep her from assuming her duties after her landslide victory in Burma's first general election, they place her under house arrest for the next 15 years, with no access to phones, newspapers or TV, and very infrequent visits from her family members, who are barred from entering the country at almost every turn. Drawn from interviews with key figures close to Suu Kyi, Rebecca Frayn's first-produced screenplay is hard-pressed to construct a sufficient portrait of either the lady or the political firestorm in which she finds herself. While the momentous historical forces at work have been understandably curtailed to suit a 143-minute running time, the discourse needn't have been so simplistic: While Gen. Ne Win barks orders at his uniform-clad minions, Suu Kyi impresses her supporters with pearls of wisdom like "Democracy will only work if we include everybody." The writing rarely rises above such platitudes, even in casual conversation; while English wasn't Suu Kyi's first language, surely her interactions with her husband and kids were delivered with less stilted formality than they are here. Besson's direction is overall more staid and classical than one would expect from the French action specialist, reinforcing the sense of a complacent, risk-averse picture that seems to have taken its filmmaking cues from its heroine's unflappable dignity. "The Lady" makes a tasteful spectacle of Suu Kyi's noble suffering without grasping, or inviting the viewer to grasp, the political anger roiling beneath. A commanding screen presence, Yeoh breathes poise and moral authority in every scene; when wearing flowers in her hair, as she does often here, she's a vision of loveliness. But because her role essentially consists of a series of elegant soundbites, the actress isn't given the resources to dig far beneath Suu Kyi's placid surface. Nor is she able to illuminate the fierce inner struggle it must have taken her to confront years of isolation with grace and composure intact. The love story is the film's most compelling element, and in their final scenes in particular, Yeoh and Thewlis do establish a stirring sense of this couple's unbreakable bond over more than a decade's separation. Because he's more in his element verbally than Yeoh and given a wider range of notes to play, Thewlis actually makes the strongest impression in the well-chosen cast, though Raggett and Woodhouse also shine as two sensitive, well-raised kids for whom the pain of parent-child separation arrived unexpectedly soon. Production is beautifully assembled, with Thai locations standing in for Burma, though the action is largely confined to Michael's Oxford home and the Rangoon estate that became Suu Kyi's beautiful prison. Eric Serra's over-emphatic score is supplemented with snatches of Pachelbel's "Canon in D," mainly during the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony where Suu Kyi is honored in absentia, one of the few sequences here that realizes its emotional potential.Camera (Technicolor, widescreen), Thierry Arbogast; editor, Julien Rey; music, Eric Serra; music supervisor, Alexandre Mahout; production designer, Hugues Tissandier; art directors, Stephane Robuchon, Gilles Boillot, Thierry Zemmour, Dominque Moisan; set designer, Tissandier; costume designer, Olivier Beriot; sound (DTS/Dolby Digital), Didier Lozahic, Ken Yasumoto; sound designer, Ken Yasumoto; visual effects supervisor, Alain Carsoux; visual effects, Duran Duboi; associate producer, Jean Todt; assistant director, Ludovic Bernard; casting, Fiona Weir, Raweeporn "Non" Jungmeier.
